Should You Lease or Finance Your Next Vehicle?
Financing pays for the whole vehicle over a term, and you own it at the end. Leasing pays for the portion of the vehicle you use during the term, plus interest, and you return it, buy it or start again when the term ends.
When Leasing Makes Sense
Leasing gives you a lower payment on the same vehicle, because you are funding depreciation rather than the full purchase price. It suits drivers who want a new vehicle every three or four years, whose annual distance is predictable, and who like being covered by warranty for the whole time they hold the vehicle. For a business the tax treatment may favour leasing, though that is a question for your accountant.
When Financing Makes Sense
Financing costs more per month and less over time, and at the end the vehicle is yours. It suits drivers who keep vehicles a long time, who drive more than a lease allows, or who modify their vehicles with a canopy, a lift, a deck or a wrap; a leased vehicle has to come back in a condition the agreement recognizes.
Kilometres Are Usually the Deciding Factor
A lease includes an annual kilometre allowance and charges for every kilometre beyond it. A predictable commute plans easily. Regular trips up-Island or ferry runs every second weekend push the arithmetic away from leasing.
At the End of a Lease
You can return the vehicle and walk away, return it and lease something new, or buy it at the residual value set when you signed. All three are legitimate options.
Work It Out With Us
Bring us your annual distance, how long you kept your last two vehicles, and whether you plan to modify this one. Those three answers usually settle it, and if they do not we will run both structures on the same vehicle. Contact and call us at 1-250-758-7311.
