British Columbia's Winter Tire Requirement
Winter tires or chains are required on most designated routes in British Columbia from October 1, through March 31 on most highways and through April 30 on mountain passes and high-snowfall routes. Many south Island roads are exempt, but the Malahat is not, and neither are most routes over the Island spine or up-Island in winter. A legal winter tire carries either the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol or an M+S marking, with at least 3.5 mm of tread depth.
Choosing the Right Tire
- All-season tires suit Island driving from spring through autumn.
- All-weather tires carry the mountain snowflake symbol and can run year-round.
- Winter tires outperform both in the cold and wear faster in warm weather.
- All-terrain tires suit trucks and SUVs on gravel, forest-service roads and job sites.
Winter compound stays pliable below 7 °C while all-season rubber hardens, and on the Island that crossover comes well before the first snow.
