Meet the New Ford Fathom: Ford’s Affordable Electric Truck Is Coming in 2027

Ford is preparing to introduce one of its most important new vehicles in years, and it isn’t another enormous pickup or high-priced electric SUV. The Ford Fathom is an all-new midsize electric truck designed around affordability, everyday practicality and technology, and it will become the first production vehicle based on Ford’s new Universal Electric Vehicle Platform.

For drivers in Nanaimo and across Vancouver Island who have been interested in an electric vehicle but have been waiting for something more practical or accessible, the Fathom could be particularly interesting. Ford has confirmed that Canadian pre-orders will begin in early 2027.

A Different Kind of Electric Ford

The Fathom represents a significant change in Ford’s approach to electric vehicles. Rather than starting with a conventional vehicle and adapting it to electric power, Ford developed a new architecture intended specifically for a new generation of more affordable EVs.

The Fathom will be the first model built on this Universal Electric Vehicle Platform. Ford describes it as a midsize electric truck, although complete exterior dimensions have not yet been announced.

What is more revealing is how Ford talks about its interior. The company says the Fathom is projected to offer more passenger volume than a Toyota RAV4 and will seat five adults. That suggests Ford is prioritizing cabin space and everyday usability rather than simply building the smallest possible electric pickup.

There will also be useful cargo space at both ends. In addition to its pickup bed, the Fathom will incorporate a front trunk, or frunk, taking advantage of the packaging possibilities created by an electric platform.

Technology Will Be a Major Part of the Fathom

Ford has already confirmed several technologies even though many mechanical specifications remain under wraps. Every Fathom will be capable of using Ford’s next-generation BlueCruise technology for hands-free highway driving on compatible roads. Ford is also integrating BlueCruise with Apple Maps to create a more seamless navigation experience from highway entrance to exit. BlueCruise remains a driver-assistance system and requires the driver to remain attentive.

A large high-resolution touchscreen will anchor the cabin, while Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility will be standard. Ford has also confirmed a Digital Key and remote functionality through the Ford app.

Perhaps more interesting for homeowners, campers and anyone who spends time outdoors around Vancouver Island is bidirectional power capability. This means the Fathom will be designed to do more than simply consume electricity; its battery will also be able to provide power externally. Ford has not yet released all the details surrounding the Canadian system or its output.

What Do We Know About Range and Performance?

This is where it is important to separate confirmed information from speculation. Ford has confirmed a standard-range battery and has indicated that other battery configurations will follow, but it has not yet published official Canadian driving range, battery capacity, horsepower, torque, payload or towing specifications.

Those figures will ultimately determine how closely the Fathom can replace a conventional gasoline pickup for different owners, especially those planning to tow boats, recreational equipment or utility trailers.

The fact that Ford has not announced those specifications yet is not unusual this far ahead of launch. More detailed information is expected as the Fathom gets closer to production.

The Canadian Price Could Be One of the Biggest Stories

Ford Canada has announced a starting price of $38,690 for the standard-range Fathom after the currently applicable $4,000 federal EVAP incentive. That figure is based on a $39,995 MSRP plus a $2,695 destination and delivery charge, less the federal incentive. Incentive availability and eligibility can change, so the final amount paid by an individual buyer will depend on the program in effect at the time of purchase.

Regardless of incentives, Ford’s underlying Canadian MSRP is significant. The Fathom is being developed specifically to bring EV pricing closer to mainstream vehicle territory rather than positioning electric technology as a premium product.

When Is the Ford Fathom Coming?

Ford says pre-orders for the Fathom will begin in early 2027. The Louisville Assembly Plant is being retooled for Ford’s new production system, with prototype builds using production-qualified parts scheduled to begin during the first quarter of 2027 before customer production follows.

There is still plenty to learn, particularly about range, battery specifications and truck capability. But the information Ford has released already makes the Fathom one of the most intriguing additions to the company’s lineup.

Drivers interested in the new Ford Fathom can follow updates through Sunshine Mountain Ford in Nanaimo as additional Canadian specifications, ordering information and availability are announced.
